Default Starting A Fire With a Pop Can and Chocolate

The theory behind this, I guess, is to polish the bottom of the can until you have a good reflective surface and go from there. Frankly, if I had chocolate in a survival situation, I would use it for something other than can polish.

You have got to be kidding. Someone actually did this one? I would have to be in a really bad spot to try this one. I think someone has too much time on their hands.

I usually don't trek very far,
when all around me empty soda cans are.

Hi...

Yes, I've seen that on one of those "survival" TV shows. It works, and could be an interesting expermint, if one were so inclined to try it.

However, I would hope that anyone NEEDING to start a fire wouldn't be so ignorant as to not bring a lighter, matches, etc. when they're afield (and believe me, not everyone does).

And, I would certainly eat the chocolate vs. trying to make a mirror out of a soda can...!!

I'll try that next spring when I see the sun again. Umm, if my chocolate lasts that long...

I am pretty sure that the chocolate would hit my mouth before before it hit the bottom of a soda can. I would not be stupid enough not to bring stay dry matches either.

You would think that some really watered down mud might polish it also. I seen Panamanians clean off a machete with sand and dirt to a high shine. Real regular like to keep the rust off. I don't think I could waste a candy bar!

You can also use a clear piece of ice that has been formed with a convex side to focus the sunlight just like a magnifying glass.

Of course, both methods take a lot of time to prepare so you will probably die of hypothermia before you can get a fire going. Besides, the chocolate will do more good for you internally than externally.

So, I'm out in the middle of nowhere with a soda can and some steel wool.............

I'll admit, it's clever.

One of the weirdest things I've heard in a long time. I would rather eat the chocolate and start a fire with the matches in my stay dry canister or the lighter I have in my pocket. Sheesh!
