Historical accounts of western exploration are frequented by the consumption of what ever they could find. Things like owls, donkeys, beavers, porcupines, horses, dogs, etc.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition practically lived on dog meat for part of the trip along the Columbia because they didn't like salmon.
Someday I'll have to tell ya the story of the winter Dad killed the badger.

PPine you are exactly right, most people you encounter daily have no idea what it is to be hungry. Believe me if put in that situation you will eat anything...including wolves, other humans etc.

If I'm hungry enough, I'll eat anything that doesn't eat me first.

I know OldSarge that was what made me think of it! I hope that it doesn't come to having to make that kind of a choice though.

Me also! Considering what people are eating now a days, they can't be all that healthy for us. I think I'd go with dog food first. I hear it's got more nutrition than the stuff we get at the local grocery store!!!

Old Sarge,
Your idea has some emotional impact, but it is patently absurd. Any decent grocery store is full of fresh produce, whole grains, etc. You have to be selective in what you choose to eat. Most dogfood is full of meat by-products. In other words offal, all the stuff left over after you take out the parts for human consumption.

Jason,
People's food preferences are the result of enculturation. The L&C exp was full of frontier types that lived largely on meat. They had little experience or interest in fish, especially strong tasting fish like salmon.
