I have been thinking about making this one. It looks pretty easy or at least doable without too fancy of tools. http://www.nimblewillnomad.com/image...NomadStove.pdf

If you are thinking about making your own, check this site:

bpLite • Lightweight backpacking, alcohol stoves, wood stoves, tips, tricks, and DIY hiking gear.

I go over there once in a while. These guys live and breathe stoves. They are more into making more efficient stoves than most of us, but the ideas are worth looking at.
I have one of the pocket cookers that are mentioned in this thread, but have never tried it. It sits in my "just in case" box.
When I was camping a lot, I liked my Optimus 8R. It always worked well for me. A word of advice- this little pup is LOUD. I still have it, and it still works well.
If you want quiet-check out the Trangia alcohol stoves. They are small, light, and very quiet. Many people like them.
Whatever you end up getting, read the instructions, and practice using them outdoors.

I also used five double jute wicks, which probably increased the soot/smoke output.

You can make a windscreen out of an aluminum oven spill pan, but you're only going to get so much heat out of a candle. Here's a simple stove you can make yourself and it works really well.

Thanks, appreciate for the offer, I'll look around and see what else I can come up with. Hold on to your other one, as soon as you let it go something will happen to the first one and you'll regret getting rid of the spare.

That doesn't look too bad for a fold up stove. I have been using one I got from Cheaper Than Dirt, it's called a Swiss Ranger Volcano Stove. The cup and cooker are pretty good but I don't care for the bottle with cork stopper. I use this quite a bit when out hiking.

I built one of those a couple of years ago and it works pretty well despite my less than desirable manufacturing skills. It is a wood burner so you will have soot issues. I liked it well enough that I bought a Gargriller Stove. I'm not sure if he makes them anymore but that and a Trangia is my current stove system. If you like flat folding wood burning stoves, check out the Emberlit Stove.

I like the idea of a woodburning stove. I'm going to have to check them out and might use one in the fall for a backcountry cooking competition just to have something different. Thanks for the links!

This is my old set up I used for quite a while. Much more compact than the Swiss Volcano stove since it fit right over the canteen.
