Narrowing it down to 5 items would be hard, I keep more than that in my emergency pack. But I guess it would be.

Cutting tool. Either a good solid knife or an axe.
Combustion device. a fire steal would be my preference since it would still work when wet.
A carrying implement. Something water tight and large enough to also cary the gear.
Cover. I would go with a good strong tarp with a reflective side.
Cooking tools. My first choice would be a mess kit, but thats actually 3 items. So failing that I'd choose a wide bottom pot.

These would be the bare minimum I would choose to take with me. But if all else fails I could make due with just a good knife if there are resources in the area. That being said, my pack, car, and emergency kit all have more than that.

I found this cartoon that reiterates what several of us have said about survival gear lists.

LOL! I can relate to that one!

Hi...

How about narrowing it down to things that can only be used by one hand?

NOTE:

"Pathfinder", who is now posting on this forum, is NOT Pathfinder1, which is me...!!

Go ahead, I'll listen. I am not very ambidextrous anyway

Everything I listed could be used 1 handed besides the fire steel. Which I would then replace with a blast match.

Default SOG's new tool

Check out SOG's new "survival" tool. I posted info on another thread. It's kinda neat.

I noticed that some people mentioned food. I don't think I would even take food, I'd be more worried about staying warm. I think I'd go with a below 0 bivy sleeping bag, warm clothes, metal pan to melt snow for water, lighter, swiss army knife.
