Bringing Dogs Camping

I like to go camping - a lot. My guy and I just bought a new Basenji puppy, though and we're wondering how long we should wait before taking him camping. We're also wondering what we should prepare ourselves for on the first camping trip; what training should he already have, how to keep him with us, etc.

He should be trained to come when called if you are going to let him run at all. Other than that I don't think there is an age limit. Just remember you're little one may be tempting to any predators that may be around and keep a close eye on him.

I had a chihuahua when I was 19, and we used to take him camping all the time starting when he was 6 months old. Of course he was so small he was usually on someone's lap most of the time. The funniest part was his first time out in the boat, I think he believed water was a solid surface he could walk on, so over the edge he went. Thank goodness we'd thought ahead and tied him to the boat.
