I agree, if this is their first time using something like this, they just may be unaware of all the components.

Those do look like the poles. I was trying to figure out the approximate size of the tent so that I could suggest a fix, but didn't look in the background.

Looks like an old style of cabin tent. Pre-rain fly era. If the tan top is canvas and the sides are a polyester, then it will not have a rain fly. The red in the middle of the roof looks like a pole sleeve and the black tabs on the right edge of the roof look like pole loops. I would bet that those are the poles for that tent in the top background.

That is what we thought at first too but those poles are actually for a gazebo that was stored in the same bag, and they don't quite fit the tent or we could just use them for the tent. Here is the only picture of the tent we could find (not a very good one i know) that shows the poles which are not not painted and look to be either 2 or 3 sections each. I know it may cost more to get new poles than a whole new tent but if it's not totally ridiculous we still might do it since the tent has sentimental value for her and would mean a lot to be able to use it. I'm going to look into using the PVC tonight but who sells replacement poles like that?

Thanks!

Ok so i found some pictures of a tent which i'm pretty sure our is supposed to look like (although this one seems newer than ours)

anyone know what this type of poles is called?

Similar to this tent, ours has the center sleeve, 3 loops on each side, and 6 grommets (4 corners and 2 center)

My grandfather had a tent sort of like that...30 years ago. Taught us kids some new words every time it was put up by the adults. The poles were hollow metal tubes, steel I think, instead of composites like today.
