| For years I backpacked almost exclusively. When we had our first baby, the mileage got shorter on backpacking trips, and we began to car camp more often just because it was easier. Now we have two kids, and backpacking hasn't happened for a while. We're reluctant car campers these days. We typically do "dispersed camping" somewhere on the national forest (no facilities or official campground). We sometimes use FS sites with a pit toilet and perhaps a water hydrant, but try hard to avoid the more developed campgrounds. To each his/her own, but I can't really understand the fun of going to spend the night in a little tent city or trailer/RV park with generators humming all around.
