I like my Dad's old 20 questions before were heading out backpacking as teenagers. Do you have a warm enough sb? Do you have something to cook with? How about carrying water? When will you be back?

I sit done and make a cheklist well ahead of the trip. If I'm going with someone we share lists and decide who will bring what. Then I add and subtract things from the list as I see things I might need, and things I probably don't want to bother with.

Short story- things vary with each trip.
