Winter Camping

If you are campground camping, most any age is okay as long as they are not bed wetters. That becomes a major problem in cold weather for kids.

We tend to not camp with the kids in the dead of winter, just because it isn't much fun to try to keep them entertained in the tent during the looooong hours of darkness. We usually rent a yurt or backcountry cabin to satisfy our winter adventure need. It's a lot of fun to ski in and then have a few comforts, like a lantern and a wood stove. My kids are 4 and barely 3.

I camped in the main campground at the Grand Canyon in January once...it was awesome!
There were maybe 2-3 other camping parties. It got down to 10 degrees. The highlight of the night was when a mountain lion started screaming in the campground...a sound I'll never forget! I was glad I was in a bulky sleeping bag.
