We don't tent camp in winter since having kids; it's just too hard to keep them warm, dry, and entertained during the long hours of darkness and cold. I still have a real need to get out though. Our solution is to rent a forest service cabin or a yurt somewhere. We enjoy the day on x-country skis or snow shoes, and have somewhere warm at night. I really love staying in yurts. You can still hear the storm outside, and it feels like a really luxurious tent. Just thought I'd throw that out as an alternative if you don't feel up to tenting or building a snow cave.

For winter a Whelen lean-to with a fire in front is hard to beat. In the what's next department, I just read about a nylon tent designed to retain heat, An Alaska oven was the name?
