| I've been fortunate, working construction for years, that I've never injured my back seriously. But backpacking is one of the least strenuous things I do.
I think packing your pack to keep the heaviest load in close to your body is a good idea, and dropping my pack to stretch my back and shoulders periodically helps for me. Also a couple of pull-ups on a tree limb seems to reduce my soreness.
Try several ideas and see what works for you.
