I love wandering the mountains looking for lava tubes. Find them a lot somtimes. What I like about them is how wild, jagged, rough, and the fact it was formed by lava thousands of years ago. Me and my wife have done one cave were several sections were only 12inches tall. Our first camping trip together we spent 3 days doing lava tubes. It is funny spending your camping trip underground all day to come out when the sun goes down. So you have a day or several in darkness. | Hello,
I recently bought property in Hawaii and judging by the geological features and location it is highly likely that part of the Kazumura cave system is under the property. There is a lava tube opening but it only goes back about 20 feet, I don't remember the correct nomenclature but I believe the bottom of the tube is actually the ceiling of a smaller tube (a tube within a tube is the description). There a tumulus about 30 feet from the opening. I have done a search on the property looking for an opening, but haven't found one yet. The Ohia forest is dense, in some places visibility through it is less than four feet, and it takes a lot of machete time to explore. Any information or recommendations you can give me would be greatly appreciated. My idea is if I can't find a natural opening, I would try to make one. I was thinking of drilling some exploratory holes and seeing if there is indeed a void under the rock. The cave system is at least 40 miles long and there are about 100 known natural openings.
