Default Training?

Besides climbing on indoor rock walls, how else can you train to do the real thing? I would think it takes strength and stamina since you are doing a lot of pulling and pushing off.

Any type of strength and cardio exercise would help for climbing but the best is still to climb.

Climbing doesn't correlate well to most "normal" workouts. Grip and upper back are most heavily involved, but like charley said, climbing(or bouldering) is the best way to train for climbing.

I knew a clibmer in the military who would hang by his fingertips on the door ledges for long periods of time. At the gym he would grab the weigts by the little 1/4" raised area in the center ot the plates with just his finger tips. I seen him do this with 25 pound plates.

Get two cement blocks and check the edges inside the space where you put your hands in them to carry them. there is a ridge on one side and none on the other. Put the 2 blocks by your stairs and using the side with no ridge, carry the blocks, with your finger tips, up the steps every time you go up and down.

Depends where you live. Idaho State University outdoor club, in Pocatello, has lava cliffs right in town about 4 blocks from the university. They teach basics in the gym, then head for the cliffs to work out.

This is the key. You have to have strong fingers. Some are not built for it and no matter how hard you train, you will not acheive the strength necessary. It has something to do with the ratio of tendon to muscle tissue.

No wonder I kept dropping those plates on my toes

Try climbing with your toes.
