Default Winter climbing?

Some neighbors of ours are going climbing next weekend. Even if it's not icy down here where normal people are won't it be icy the higher you climb? Pretty dumb question. Just another habit that dumbfounds me.

When I was at the U of Washington I got interested in climbing in the Cascades. Some guys would be in school on a winter Monday moring talking about a peak that they had climbed and named after a first ascent. Then I started to meet people with no fingers and toes, back problems from falls, and dead friends. It is addictive and dangerous, but many people love the snow and ice for climbing.

I doubt I would chance it when the winter rolls in, for me I want to see all of the land not falling to my death. I would still see some I am sure tumbling down a mountain side but the risk would not be worth it for me.

Hi...

I don't blame you.

You didn't say what/where you were invited to climb. Alps? Rockies? Ant hills?

Does the possibly exist for you to get some experience on much lower slopes, but with some climbing gear...crampons, etc.?

NOTE:

"Pathfinder", who is now posting on this forum, is NOT Pathfinder1, which is me...!!

It depends on where you are. I have friends excited about climbing in the red tomorrow and depending on when the rain arrives I could climb tomorrow. Then there is real cold and icey alpine climbing in the mountains. Many ppl enjoy it. I would like to hike in the mnts in some snow but I am not interested in ice climbing or mountaineering.
