Default hobby for kid, budgeting for us

Over the holiday break a friend gave our son a motorized little boat, since they all he wants to do is play with the boat. At least twice a week we are taking him to the pond so he can get his racing time in. Guess what he wants now, a real one of course.

What a great way to ease into the bigger boy toys. You could take him to boat shows in the area and build his dream. This would give him something to work toward....give him a goal.

My son had one of those and he drove us crazy always wanting to go and run it on the water. And of course this led to watching the hydroplane races which I really enjoy so it's been a real win win situation.

Hi...

Sounds like your friend is both generous and wise...!! Glad that he's having so much fun with it.

I loved looking at the docked boats with my Grandparents. I used to dream of the three of us sailing away to a magical land. My Grandpa was a sailor and he took me to many boat shows; great educational experience.

When I was little I went with my Dad to all sorts of little airports to hang out and look at light planes. He took me for my first flight when I was 9 in an Aeronca Champ. Later he managed to buy and refurbish a Stinson and then buy into several Cessnas. Some of the best times I remember with him were just hanging out at little grass strips, sometime shooting ther breeze around a potbellied stove and drinking bad coffee, sometimes just lounging around the hangar as guys piddled with planes or shot touch and go landings.

Hopefully your son will have good times like that with his model boats and perhaps later with a real boat.

Cory, the ole saying goes that a boat is a hole in ya yard that ya poor money into. You have to love it enough to think it is worth the cash.
