Now if I can find a really sweet deal of course I will look into it, but just like cars a boat can have "its time" and then its just not worth it. Is there an average set of years when a boat becomes too much trouble?

I'm no expert, but depending on the water it has been used in and the condition it has been kept a five year old boat can be total garbage and a 20 year old can be a beaut. Of course it also depends heavily on the material it was manufactured from. In my opinion look over any potential buy with a critical eye and you should be fine.
