We are thinking when we both retire Australia is on the list of places to visit and maybe even some scuba time while we are there if I can get over my weird fear of it. We have friends local so we have tourist guides waiting for us. Any tips or maybe some books I could read up in in the meantime that might help from experts here?

Hmmm. I don't know any guides but if you are serious, you could go ahead and learn to scuba so you would be ready. It would give you a good hobby too, that will sharpen the skill as you go along.
