Ouch! Poor kid didn't know to let the air out when going up.

A lot of people become complaicent (sp?) or dive above their training level. These mistakes are sometimes compounded by a buddy. They feel safer and are drawn into a bad situation, then panic sets in.
Solo divers realize they have no plan B. Dive profiles are more conservative and some folks, me included, feel I only have one person to worry about, not two.
Most people feel diving alone is bad. They should stick to the buddy plan.

Man, to each his own, but there is no way I'd go down there alone. Even when you do everything exactly right, there's no telling what could go wrong. Always best to have a buddy to bail you out should the worst happen.
