Default Unknown Water

How likely are you to dive in unknown water? I know a lot of times, we don't know what the terrain is like underwater unless the water is clear enough to see the bottom, which it rarely is. I am getting ready to train as a diver for our local rescue group and I'm very interested in learning all I can before I go to the class.

Our unknown diving is in pristine alpine lakes. If you can't see the bottom, it's because the bottom is wayyyyy down there. Cold shock is the only issue we have.

As far as SCUBA is concerned, I never had a problem with diving in unknown waters. Remember...plan your dive and dive your plan.

Yeah, there is one place I would love to SCUBA and it is unknown to everyone. In Ohio, what used to be 7 Caves, has one cave with a hole in the back that leads to a large underground lake (is that what it would be called)? There is one small hole in and that is it as far as I know. I would of course take a buddy and have people waiting at the surface. Of course its closed to the public now so no chance of that.

Cave diving is a little to creepy for me. I once saw a special on TV about two guys who wore a transmitter and then entered a sink hole in Florida. Another team tracked their progress on land and followed them several miles as they used re-breathers to negotiate a large underground tunnel. The surface team tracked them through town and under a restaurant. Finally exiting in a smaller sink hole.

Well, if you have a good plan and go steadily there is no fear of not knowing the terrain. Be relaxed and confident and everything will be OK.

Wow, for a second there I thought that story was going to have a tragic ending. Seeing as it didn't I think that is pretty cool. Do you know if that special is online anywhere?

I have been trying to locate it, but all I can come up with is short clips of other sinkhole diving videos. I'm almost sure it was a Discovery show but I could be wrong. It was a few years ago. I will keep looking for it, I'd like to watch it again.

Wow, diving into an unknown cave - no thanks! Honestly I am not one to dive into any water that I am unsure of. I guess it's the girlie girl in me. I'm more into swimming pools and Oceans.
