I need to get one that I can hook to the comp and get trip info from. Knowing the distance traveled and elevation change would be helpful. My GPS is really only used for geocaching. I probably use it more in town to find camo pill bottles than in the woods.

GPS's are useful and can be a great help in certain situations. I agree, more folks are dependent on them and loose their edge in Land Nav skills. I own several GPS's but still rely on the map and compass for navigating. Since I have Topo mapping capabilities with my GPS, it's like having a small moving map in my hand, but it doesn't beat having a full map sheet and compass.

What's that old quote? Give me a tall ship and a star to steer her by.

I'm old school. I don't own a GPS. I don't want one. I have a cell phone but increasingly I leave it behind remebering a day before cell phones when I thought nothing of wandering off with just a compass and a general idea of the lay of the land. I like the idea of being on my own with the knowledge that if someting goes wrong I have to rely on my own talents and abilities to get out of it. I think that is a part of the human spirit that is being lost.
