Default Running into snakes

What do you do when you come across a snake on your walk through the woods or on a trail? Are you the kind that gets nervous or are you intrigued? I like all kinds of animals and snakes do fascinate me. The only thing is I do keep my distance because I don't know what's poisonous or not.

I usually make some noise to scare them away. I don't care to examine them up close. I used to catch garter snakes as a kid though. I have been known to walk around a big rattle snake.

I usually trek very far,
when all around snakes are.

Snakes have the right of way...it's the law.

amazing how high an old man can jump when he has one foot all ready over the top of one.

We came upon a faded midget rattler in Peekaboo gulch and just bridged over it. The canyon is a slot so there was really nowhere else to go. We have bridged over them when coming down very tight drainages, go around them when the terrain allows and if they are on the move we stop and watch them travel on by. One time a small diamondback was coiled and asleep on a ledge trail and we just stepped over it and went on our way. Almost everyone who gets bit by a pit viper is a young intoxicated male who decided to mess with them.

We saw this beauty of a faded midget rattler coming down off a mesa just east of Capitol Reef. I keep trying to teach girlfriend to say very calmly where the snake is when she sees one. In this case she just screamed SNAKE which made me think it was underfoot and I jumped about six feet. We have seen a bunch of them so I think she will become used to this someday?

Sure, I like to watch them, but from a distance. I don't mess with anything in nature. That's how people get hurt and put in bad situations.

Since I KNOW there are no poisonous snakes in the region where I live, I can be relaxed when I see a snake. When I lived in the south the water snakes in particular gave me "the creeps"

I generally run in the opposite direction, and THEN clean myself off. Too many poisonous ones around here for my tastes. Ran across an eight foot rat snake walking my dog in the backyard...I didn't even know I could run that fast.
