Default Walking as a prep for hiking season

The real is question how many of you use walking as in City streets to get ready for hiking/keeping in shape for hiking?

I don't live in a city or town. But I do backpack quite much.

I am lucky enough at 43 that I still don't do anything to prepare. I just grab my pack and go.

I walk all the time, I walk in town and in the country. I even walk on a treadmill from time to time. I don't walk in the city to prep for longer hikes in the woods though. I don't see how that would help me, it's not the same terrain.

My thinking has been that if I m moving over land in any form that movement will help me when hiking and should be helpful if I ever get a chance to do more than a two day backpack trip. Of course one needs to relize I was 290 pounds about 16 months ago and I have lost a bit under a 100 of that by walking and eating in moderation, but that is another form altogether!! So I was wondering if anyone else had found that walking aid their ability to hike/backpack. IndianaHiker your day is coming! Keep fit and you will not have as much work to do as this 50 year old former fat man!!
