Yes Ponderosa, but you are young and athletic. Picture the looks and the comments I get when I say I'm going wandering alone for a week in the Selway or the Church.

Oh, Grandpa, you have no idea what a compliment you've given this 37 year old (young?) woman, who has always been one of the last ones chosen for any team sport on account of being a total clutz. You may be the first person, ever, to call me "athletic."

I get the worries about hiking alone, but being alone is the biggest reason I took up the sport. No one to ask me to do stuff, no one to depend on, no one depending on me. just me, the woods, and Armin Van Buren (in my headphones). I want an InReach so people can follow me on the net, but they are quite expensive. I guess I'll have to stick close to home while I build up my endurance, and get one before a big outing.

Read my blog with its now correct address:

Do not lead, because I will not follow. Do not follow, because I will not lead. Just stay the Hell out of my way and leave me alone.

I've seen this before. Don't worry. It's just her way of saying :Nice knowing you, Sarge. See you on the other side.

We live in the society of fear. The outdoors is the great unknown for many people. Hiking alone is one of the great joys in life. A dog is the perfect amount of companionship.

I would feel safer on an untraveled trail than a well traveled one.

Just don't let her watch 127 Hours or Into the Wild or you will never get out again.

My aunt is always worried that her son and I are going to be eaten by bears (no bears in SW Louisiana) Gators (alligators don't randomly eat people), crocodiles (not in the US) and mountain lions (show me a mountain in Louisiana). Every time we'd stop by her house and tell her about our next adventure we'd hear something like "I heard that a guy in California just got attacked by a cougar. And if one of them fell asleep in a box car or something it could end up over here."

She got bit by her neighbor's house cat the other day, demonstrating that her spot in town is more susceptible to wild animal attacks than our outdoor adventures.

Too bad about the neighbors cat. Those cat bites hurt. Hope she doesn't pick up an infection.

Rest assured New, she only worries because she loves you.

What's even worse than all those vicious animals out there trying to hunt us down? Insects! I hear it all the time, watch out for West Nile virus, spider bites that will stop your heart. People are telling me to watch out for stuff I never heard of before. It'samazing that more people aren't living in a bubble!
