Default The sound of running water

I have always felt calmer and happier when I am listening to the sound of running water. A stream is best, but even a fountain in the city does the trick in a pinch. What is it in our evolution that would cause this sound to have such a calming effect?

I don't know. When I hear water running I usually have to go pee.

I have heard that Niagara Falls makes people happy because of the positive ions from all the friction from the rushing water. I don't know if smaller amounts of water can produce the same effect or not.

River runs near my window and it's more strange for me to sleep somewhere where there is no sound of running water than somewhere where it is.

Maybe it comes from the idea that drinking moving water is safer than stagnant water. The thought that a safe source of water is nearby would have been comforting to our ancestors.

I like the sound of running water too.

Wish I could buy a good beer instead of just renting it for a few minutes.

The concept you describe is almost universal around the world. I like to camp near rapids on river trips, which we interpret as white noise.

Hi...

Yes, some sounds are conducive to sleep. Even the rolling and pitching of a boat or ship can have the same effect on some.

When I'm in sleep mode when I'm afield, I prefer minimal noise/distraction, as I like to hear what, if anything, that might otherwise be going on around me.

NOTE:

"Pathfinder", who is now posting on this forum, is NOT Pathfinder1, which is me...!!

I think you might be on to something LameBeaver. I often go to the river when I need to think on something or when I'm feeling a high level of stress. It is like medicine.
