I prefer to swim in anything above 60 if I am feeling brave but I have been dared to go when its chilly (and always gotten sick after). When you get in and the water is just horribly hot, its not worth it. For me it kills the mood you get after a nice swim.

In the ocean off of Cape Cod I have gone swimming as late as November and the water was still fairly warm especially compared to the cold air. I avoid spring swimming though even if the air is warm because the water does not get warm enough for me until July! Air temp means little to me, it's all about the temp of the water.
