Default Family bikes

For those parents here who have younger kids, how long did it take for you to teach your kid to ride? We want to get family bikes soon so we can get out of the house (and work office) more, but I am not sure if our youngest can stay caught up with us.

My four year old is still using training wheels, although a few of her friends are riding without them. We've always relied on a good bike trailer for family rides since our kids were babies. A tag-a-long bike that attaches to the back of an adult's bike is another good option to get out there sooner.

I started the kids really young (with training wheels). I think we all had bikes and started riding by the age of 6. Riding bikes together as a family is a great way to bond, spend time together and exercise.

The tag-a-long might end up being a good choice then, and its going to be a good bit before she can catch up with us. Going down the trail there is a huge hill that even walking down can be tricky, might need to wait a few years for her to get caught up with the whole balance a bike on a hill trip.

You may have to keep the more challenging rides for later, or when you can leave the kids with friends. Make the family rides more leisurely and relaxed. That way everyone can have fun.

It really depends on it there are other kids around that they see riding. The fear factor plays a big part. The oldest didn't ride without training wheels till she was about 6 and the youngest learned when he was about 4.

My son started riding a two wheeler unassisted at the age of 3, however at 7 he's still not able to keep up with us on rides so we attached a tag a long to my husband's bike and it works well for us.
