Default Kevlar

I caught the ending of some show the other day on the tv showing the accidents that can happen when racers have mishaps. I was amazed this one guy managed to walk away and I am sure the Kevlar was a great save but I am wondering if anyone here rides that could tell me how it actually works?

I'm not completely sure, but I think it's it's some sort of space age type plastic that's woven together somehow. I know it's what they make bullet proof vests out of though.
