Default small frame bike

I am looking into getting a new bike but I am not sure what might work best for me. I would only use it for city trails and working out so maybe a few hills in the way. Any brand that is good on the market this time of year? I have not shopped for a bike in over a decade.

Go to the local bike shop and see what they have.

If not doing off road like at a hybrid. The will climb hills easier than a mountain bike but have the more upright riding position that will be more comfortable.

Behind Lower South Falls. Ice had begun to fall as the morning warmed. I was begining to think that I didn't want to be conked by a 6 foot icicle.
