21 speeds and have used them all. Sure beats over working yourself on those long rides in one gear!

Single speed bikes have made a huge comeback in recent years, Personally I still like gear jammin' but you might want to look at something like this bike:
Kona Unit

or this one:
Surly Karate Monkey

Yeah, ran a triathlon on a hilly bike course, I probably used every speed in one afternoon.

On a long haul, a single speed bike would be the pits! How can you not enjoy multiple speed bikes. I have a 21 speed mountain bike and I can honestly say I have had a use for all those gears. What a lot of folks don't realize is that it's not about the speed all the time, but conservation of energy. A steady drive will get you further than an all out balls to the wall run in speed. I'm still talking long haul, not a race to the corner. I admit all those gears can be confusing. Think of it this way, Front spocket is power ranges, like a transfere case on a four wheel drive and rear is gears...like in your car, 1st, 2nd, 3rd.... Pick a power ranger for the given terrain and run through the gears. if you find yourself not being able to perform at the beginning or end of the gear run, change power ranges.

It depends on the type of bike-riding you want to do. I agree, it is hard to just get a simple bike to ride on a straight, flat surface anymore. Too many bells and whistles these days.
