I have not ridden a bike since I was like twelve years old, but my husband and I would like to start. There are some nice trails around here we can use, but first we need bikes! Are there any you would recommend for less than $300 a piece?

There is no particular brand that I could recommend. But I would strongly suggest that you get yourselves mountain bikes. They are great for off road trails because of the wider tires, better suspension, and gears so you can adapt to different riding conditions. That's what my wife and I have and we've ridden on all different types of roads and trails. .

I agree with DMan, Mountain bike are so much more versatile and hold up well. As far as how much to spend all depends on how much use you will putting these bikes through. You can pick up a decent bike at Walmart for under $300 easy. But it's not going to be a really high quality bike. I know some folks who have theirs for years with no issues, but one I got my son many years ago didn't hold up well. I bought one from Sears (Tunturi) back in 1995. I still have it and I used to put it through some good rough trails back in the day. I paid $240 for it then.
