I posted this story last spring. This happened to the son of one of our foremen at work.

One of the foremen where I worked had a young son "practicing" driving a snow machine in the small field behind their house with mom and dad looking on. He was driving slow, wearing a helmet, all was going well. He then hit something solid in the snow, snapping his head foreward. They figured the weight of the helmet was the extra straw that snapped his neck. He was dead by the time his parents reached him. What a fluke accident. Was it meant to be? Must we go through life avoiding all risks?
Driving a car, riding a horse, walking a forest trail....there is always risk. If we eliminate all risk from our lives we may as well be dead.

Same thing for seat belts. I know of an individual who survived a major crash without wearing a seat belt. The three others inside weren't so lucky, one was not belted and killed when he was thrown from the vehicle, the other two who were belted...one died, the other is spending the rest of his life in a wheel chair. It's all about the odds and if your're a gambler. I chose not to wear a helmet.

If I were stunt driving an atv, then I would wear a helmet. I do not though, so I do not use a helmet. I only use an atv for getting around long distances, like my grandma's pastures, so I just do not use a helmet.

Good point Miley, When up in Alaska and we are on the Polaris 6x6's cruising out in the wilderness, we are taking or time and using the machine to get from point to point. Not race. Ya sure you could take a tumble and bump your noggin, but what are the odds. Now if I chose to start riding dirt bikes again and rally around like a wild man, then my odds are increased so on goes the helmet.

Nope, can't say I do. I make my kids wear one, whether they're bike riding or ATV riding. Now I do wear one when I ride my motorcyle, but it just don't feel right wearing on on the ATV. Besides, I'm 50 years old. If I die tomorrow, I've lived a pretty good life.
