Bought a horse

My brother just bought my niece a horse, they live in town so the horse is kept at a stable about 15 miles outside of town. My kids can’t wait to go up and ride the horse. I told my brother he is crazy! That is a lot of work, my niece wants to go up everyday and feed and brush her horse so that is a good sign. I wonder how long this will last though. Anyone own a horse that is not at your place?

We don’t own any horses but my cousins do. They actually built a big horse barn though, so both of their horses are right at their place. I think your brother has it easier. They don’t have to go daily and take care of the horses, I imagine the stable people will do that. My cousin has to go out several times a day and take care of the horses (food, water, clean stalls, brush, etc.) Sounds to me like your brother has the right idea.

I used to live in a place not far from a stable, and several folks in the area had horses that they kept there. They liked it because it was close in to where they lived---only about 3 miles away.

How old is your niece? Remember, it won't be her fault if she can't feed and brush it every day, if someone has to drive her. Is there someone else taking care of it?

Never count on someone else to take proper care of your horse no matter how much you are paying for it.

I had my horses stabled before we built our barn at home. It sounds as though your niece is a real horse lover. If this is true she will find a way to get there.

All our ponies are right here on our property.
I think it is parental responsibility to get kids where they need to be doing what they need to do.
With an animal you have to be there every day, every time and no exceptiopns.
If you are not going to be there to feed and care for the animal then it will die of neglect.

I agree with the post here about expecting someone else to care for your horse when you pay them. I think you still have to check on the horse everyday! It's your pet.

Everyday without fail unless I was sick or it was a Monday (many riding and training facilities are closed that day) I was out with mine. Most times when a girl falls in love with her horse there are not very many days she would want to miss!

As long as you can afford the horse and are able to proper care that the animal will need I see no issue with it. Personally if I had one myself it would be on my property not a stable.
