I am trying to talk my spouse into getting a horse, I would love the idea for our kids to have a large animal and its not like we do not have nearly enough room. What are some tips for first time owners?

Don't ever get complacent around a horse. Most times they are what you see. But there are those few who will wait until you are not expecting anything and throw you like a dishrag over their heads. You will land on the ground-sometimes far from nowhere without a mount to go back on-if you can still walk.
