Default Most Memorable Fishing Experience

What's your best or most memorable fishing experience? For me, it was a simple one day fishing trip that my dad took my brother and me on when I was little. We didn't even catch any fish that day, but it was the first time he'd ever included me on the fishing trips that were usually just for him and my older brother. That's the first (and still the best) memory I have of fishing.

Probably when I was introduced to trout fishing with my dad. I was exclusively a bass fisher for about 20 yrs. then in one trip, I was bitten by the trout bug and never went back.

Also now that I think about it, all the lakes we had around us when I was a kid. My friends and I would go up to random strangers houses and ask them if we could fish their ponds on the property and most would say yes.....and thats why they call em the good 'ol days!

It seems ask anyone about their most memorable experience and it will involve family. Dads, Moms, Grandpas, and grandmas, even bros and sisters have a huge impact on our early memories.

Salmon fishing with my Dad and two brothers near Quadra Island , BC. We were catching silvers around 10 pounds with the old knuckle buster Canadian reels and light tackle. If we caught a dogfish we would stun it and throw it out for the eagles to swoop down on next to the boat.

Another one just poped into my head. Trout fishing with a fly rod on a pack trip in the Sierras in about 1980. After dinner I went out alone and waded with just shorts in a small river. My friend had given me some beat-up old flies he had tied. Cast after cast was nothing but small golden trout in the 9-12 inch range. They were like art in my hand, and I threw them all back.

Hi...

I never had a mentor for my hunting, fishing or trapping endeavors. I was entirely self taught. I did get some help in my trapping efforts from trapping books and magazines, though.

My favorite fishing was for brook trout. Even though this area has many large streams and rivers known workdwide for their trout fishing, I always preferred the smaller streams to fish. My best, and most memorable, trout fishing accomplishment came about when I was in my mid-teens. I caught a brook trout that was twenty three inches long, and weighed four pounds. Not even close to a record, but of a size to cause envy to any fisher.

I've also caught many large pickerel and bass, but I've never weighed or measured them.

It was on a farm pond at twilight...that time when your eyes start to play tricks on you. There was absolutely no wind and the water was like glass. I switched to a spool of 15 lb line, and tied on a steel leader and a Heddon Crazy Crawler, which is a floating lure with an action similar to a jitterbug. The first cast brought a large swirl...something big was after it. I carefully cast in the same spot and his next attempt was successful. A couple minute later, I reeled in a nice sized Northern Pike. I don't remeber the exact length and weight, but is was a good-sized fish.

Hi...

You reminded me of some fishing I did on a lake in the Arctic one summer...wish I could remember the name of the lake. I was working on a project by myself, and took a little time off to try my luck fishing.

I put on one of my favorite lures...a Rapala... and on the first cast hooked a fish. A nice northern pike. Well, now that I knew that Rapalas were good here, I thought I'd try a Johnson's silver minnow next.

Unknown to me, somehow...the knot holding the Rapala had become undone...and just barely held until I boated the northern. How did I find that out? Well, on my very first cast with the silver minnow, the lure just kept on flying through the air. The knot didn't even have enough "grab" left to keep the minnow on the line...!!

Live and learn, I guess.

I'm not much of a fisherman but my dad is and I loved those trips in the early morning with him. Those are my best memories from childhood.

My most memorable fishing experience was when I finally wasn't afraid of baiting my own hook because of fear of touching the worm. I use to wear rubber gloves to do it. I was a wimp. But, as I got older, I didn't care anymore and the gloves were history. I've never caught anything to brag about though.
