I have never been rock climbing before and I am really interested in getting started on boulder climbing. I'm not sure if I should start out at a climbing gym first to assess whether or not I am strong enough to boulder climb or if I should just go for it. Any suggestions?

I would suggest finding a gym that has their own 'fake' rock-climbing walls. We used to have them all the time for special events at school. While there's an obvious disconnect since there aren't real rocks, it lets you keep an eye for ledges and get used to adjusting your body weight before encountering the real thing.

You need to do everything you can to mitigate the effects of gravity. Redundancy is key. Always back-up every important piece of gear with another piece of gear and use more than one anchor at a belay & rappel station. Your life depends on it.
