    Steep Hills

I have a distinct memory of the only time since learning how to ride a bike, of falling off of my bike. It was a very steep hill, though those in the group I was in climbed it without too much trouble (just a lot of effort!). Just as I was about to hit the crest, it was like I ran out of juice...

Good Bait for Fresh or Salt Water

I've used sharp cheddar cheese both out on the ocean as well as in lakes, and with a lot of success. People laughed at me at first for using cheese in the ocean, but hey, I caught as many fish as they did with their squid bait!

    Have You Ever Gotten Lost?

I once got lost while hiking down a hill. Recent rains had cut multiple "paths" into the ground and I wandered off the actual trail onto one of them...found myself at the top of a precipice and knew I was lost. Fortunately, I knew that I just needed to keep heading downhill to eventually hit my...

    Cost of Lessons

How much do lessons in horseback riding cost in your area? I've been calling around a few places for my niece, thinking some lessons would be a nice Christmas gift, but it's so expensive!

    Food on Long Camping Trips

Ever go on a long camping trip and get tired of the same food again and again that you're left with in the end? Can you prevent this, or is that just one of the characteristics of "roughing it" to you?

    Hiking Dog Etiquette

I know that my dog would never intentionally hurt anyone, and I never have him off-leash. He loves people and is always eager to go up to strangers, sniff, and lower his head for a pat. This is usually fine, except when we encounter people who are scared of dogs or allergic to them. He moves to...

    Teaching Kids about Humane Traps

At what age do you think it's appropriate to start sharing trapping information with kids? How do you explain to them why traps should be humane?

    Cooking Veggie Burgers?

I'm bringing a friend who doesn't camp often camping with me, and she has said that she will bring veggie burgers along since she is a vegetarian. I've never cooked veggie burgers over an open fire before, though I've done real burgers before. Do they require more/less time or any different...

    First Time Backpacking

I'll admit, while I love hiking and camping, I've never had the opportunity to truly combine the two in a backpacking trip. I've camped for many days (sometimes even a couple of weeks!) and hiked, but always returned to the same campground at the end. A friend of mine invited me to join her...

    A "Balanced" Beginner's Tent

I'm helping a friend buy her first tent - she doesn't want to buy a separate one for summer and winter camping, so something that perhaps has a removable top with a mesh layer underneath to either keep in warmth or let in a cool breeze as needed would be ideal. Any suggestions?

    Hammocks

Anyone got any good recommendations? I've found a couple with mosquito netting, which I LOVE given my proneness to getting bitten. Sometimes they seem to sacrifice comfort for that, though...or should no hammock ever be "too" comfortable? :tinysmile_hmm_t:

    Ice Cream!

I was just enjoying a bowl of ice cream and though...man, how awesome would it be to have ice cream while camping? I wonder if it would last in a cooler for any length of time, or if you'd have to bring an RV with a freezer to enjoy it.

    Leave No Trace

Has anyone heard of this program, which emphasizes experiencing the outdoors in such a way that you leave them unaffected by your presence? It's an interesting concept that seems extreme sometimes in the effort its followers go to...but even if everyone took just a little advice from it, I think...

    Building Endurance

I'll be spending some time during my summer with a friend who loves mountainbiking. I don't live in a place where there are places to build up my endurance to keep up with her, so I was wondering...are there other exercises I could do, like running, that would help with that?

    Girly Topic: Lotions

I'm so excited for the summer and the extra time I'll have to go hiking! I always have one problem with the heat, though; if I put lotion on my legs, they tend to sweat a lot, or sometimes if it's a fruity lotion, it attracts mosquitos. Am I the only one with this problem? Anyone have better...

    For the Long-Haired...

How much effort do you put into taking care of your hair on long camping trips? Mine tends to stay in a ponytail and get washed, if not at least rinsed, daily if possible...but I don't worry about it much else until I get home.

    Camping While Pregnant

I know people will have varying opinions on this, but I want to hear the different points of view. A friend of mine is 5 months pregnant and wants to join some friends on a short camping trip, but her husband has told her he doesn't feel comfortable with it. It's their first pregnancy: would you...

    Lamps

Does anyone know of any really high-powered, crazy-bright camping lanterns that are battery powered? We've been using Coleman gas lanterns which are great, but sometimes we forget to grab the gas. Everyone brings batteries, but it seems all the lanterns we have are too weak to give us the light...

    For the Ladies...

How concerned are you while camping about your appearance? I really could care less and enjoy being able to not worry about being expected to have shaved legs and styled hair...but I see some women bringing makeup kits and mirrors and still taking time to work on their looks.

    Movies on the Drive

When I was growing up, the drive to the camping ground was part of the trip - we'd play games to stay entertained and look out the window to see the city slowly give way to suburbia and then good old nature... But now, with tv screens built into cars, I see more and more families just letting...
