    Artifacts and Relics

As a kid, my friends and I used to roam the woods and fields during the summer. One particular field yielded up many arrowheads and pieces of pottery that we considered treasures. Some of those arrowheads are beautiful and appear to be in perfect shape. I can just imagine using one on the end...

    Non-Traditional Thanksgiving Meal

We just happened to be in New Orleans and Pensacola one year at Thanksgiving and ended up eating the best Thanksgiving dinner. We had baked, stuffed red snapper, oysters and shrimp. One of these days, I'm going to do that again.

    Venison or Turkey?

I would love to have some venison for Thanksgiving this year but we don't have any in the freezer. We'll have to settle for the traditional store bought turkey. What are you having for Thanksgiving dinner?

What not to do at the coast.

When will I ever learn? We went to the coast last weekend and the weather was perfect. Not too cold, not too hot. We have a favorite Thai restaurant we planned to visit on Saturday night but it was closed. We ended up across the street at a Japanese restaurant that didn't have much traffic...

    Even on the Coldest Day

Visiting the coast this past weekend, I noticed there was a lot of fishing still going on. This is a great time of year to catch the last few close in to shore. Standing out on the pier or surf sure can chill you to the bone. How long do some of you stay out before becoming a Popsicle?

    Boulder Flooding

Saw this on the news this morning. If you've ever been to Boulder and know what the Flat Irons look like, you'd know that the water is just pouring down on the town. I do hope people will have sense enough to evacuate and do what officials recommend.

Summer is back with a Vengeance

Here in the South, we have enjoyed a very mild, very wet summer. It's almost a tropical rain forest scenario. For the last couple of weeks, summer has returned with a vengeance and the humidity is about 100%. I'm now ready for fall and cooler weather. Whew!!

    The Squirrel That Got Away

My mom has a huge pecan tree in her yard. One year, the squirrels were having their way with that tree and she decided to do something about it. Every day she set a squirrel trap and every day she caught a squirrel. She would then put the trap in the trunk of her car and drive several miles...

    Yacht Dreaming

While visiting Southport, NC this summer we went over to the natural harbor and went yacht dreaming. OMGosh! There were some there bigger than my house. I can only imagine what it would be like to go out on one of these. Anyone out there ever gone yachting?

    Surviving a Flash Flood

Did anyone catch the story about the rock climbers that survived a flash flood? It seems they were repelling down into a cavern of sorts when water just started gushing in from above. They took shelter under an outcropping of rock and had to wait it out. If you saw this story let me know...

    Kayak Fishing

I just read an article about a dude who caught a huge fish from a kayak. Not being a kayaker, I can't imagine how it would be to reel that sucker in and keep my balance all at the same time. Any takes on this?

    Nuts in Boats

This is the week to find all kinds of nuts on boats in the ocean. Take a couple of "good old boys" with fishing poles, add a case of beer and a boat and you have a fantastic combination for a rescue opportunity. My brother works for an ocean rescue company and you should hear some of the...

    Campfire Chicken

I just came across the best looking chicken recipe for the campfire. This looks simple and tasty. Would probably be good on the grill as well. Anybody tried anything similar?

    Washing Dishes

Just taking a poll here. How do you wash or clean your dishes, pots and pans when you are out camping? Some take dish soap along and boil water. Other's wash with sand in the stream. What's your routine?

    Spanish Mackerel

The sister-in-law gave me some Spanish Mackerel last time I was down there and I'm undecided how to cook it. Grilled is good but a little dry. Baked is good but a little dry. Anyone have a favorite recipe for mackerel?

    Camping in a Hurricane?

Many years ago, I remember camping on the beach in a tent with my folks. That's when there weren't so many restrictions in place. During the night, a rather strong tropical storm moved through giving us a night to remember. Everything was wet, ten flooded, equipment washed away, etc. I guess...

    Fire Pit in January

After all the rain here in the South last week, we've managed to have 2 days of sunshine so far. We were so excited, we decided to grill out last night and because it was too cold to be outside, we cranked up the fire pit. It was nice to be able to sit around the fire and have a few until the...

    Crock Pot Turkey Legs

Slow Cooked Turkey Have you ever slow cooked turkey pieces before? I tried turkey legs in the crock pot yesterday and not only did they smell wonderful cooking, they were absolutely delicious. I stood them up to cook and seasoned them. Oh my! We will do this again.

    Wildlife in Winter

I looked out my picture window yesterday and sighed at all the cloudy, gray weather. All of a sudden, there was a flash of read that looked like a crayon mark across the gray. It was the reddest cardinal I have ever seen. It brightened my day to see such a colorful bit of wildlife in winter.

How do you cook your mackerel?

Heading to the east coast this weekend for a few days and plan to pick up some fresh mackerel. Do you have a favorite way to cook your mackerel? I like mine grilled with a little lemon pepper but I'm always open to suggestions.
