    Propane Cost

I figured that this would happen; so I stocked up on propane about a year ago... plenty of refills for those one pounders in a larger tank... when the leaking Schraeder valves become an issue I will see if I can figure out a way to replace them or maybe go with a legitimate, small refillable...

    Your most appreciated camping equipment

While I appreciate BFGs; (experience and lockers can, often, overcome for a variety of sins). The things that I would not go camping without are; appropriate clothing, a warm multilayered sleeping bag, a tarp or poncho, a medium fixed or locking blade knife, and a working BIC lighter...

    Solar Kits

I went to lithium (iron phosphate) some time ago and it is one of the better things that I have done for camping Enjoy!

    Solar Kits

Over the years I have used multiple various sized solar setup; I don't recommend kits as they are normally overpriced and over rated. Beware most solar panel outputs are vastly over rated (by 12 times for the last smallish (25 watt; advertised) ones that I tried from amazon). Don't expect too...

    Proverbial First Aid Kit

The most used items in my kit have been Vetwrap (4") ace bandage for animals (comes in colors); for sprains etc...and they are cheap enough to give away (got the last batch from the equine section of petsmart) and Providone (spelling?) -iodine solution; it actually works... (wally mart) I...

Looking for a big outdoor survival knife?

I too, once made the big knife mistake (too heavy awkward to be much use) and settled on (primarily) 2 knives; a SAK (Victornox tinker) in my pocket and a smallish ~3.5 or 4 inch fixed blade (used to ride on a pack strap now lives in the cooking box). There is usually a largish 3", or so, folder...

The New Camping Mistakes We Make

I actually made the mistake of buying a GPS, once. It was a pain to use and contributed nothing but hassles to the trip besides distracting me from important things like scenery, nature and living... I promptly improved my life by throwing it away.... no worries about batteries, signal...

Now that Santa has come and gone; its sale time and therefor time to look for the items that Santa might have missed (and, potentially, acquire them at a discount...). It also might be about time to think about, starting to consider, getting around to, planning on, beginning; inventory and...

I have thought about and seen various"signs" that people use to help friends find their sites. In the end I just notify invite the good and reliable friends of our anticipated location and (and, occasionally, provide detailed directions) then keep a close watch for their vehicle if they have...

    Leaving the Infestation

Fortunately, I don't have to deal with mobile homes, especially when camping. Long ago I decided to leave the camper congestion/rat race problems behind and take my tent places that they cannot go. If there is another camper within a quarter mile, or more; I am not doing it right. If there are...

unfortunately no; it was before I got a digital camera (and cell phones were the size of a brick)... It was your basic wall tent with 4 foot walls, no floor and no windows... It was heavy though. The conduits and corner connectors (bent rebar) were a bit of a pita to haul around. Enjoy!

If all else fails... a couple of friends (one with a heavy duty sewing machine) and I once put together an electrical conduit framed canvass wall tent out of canvass dropcloths (some used some new)... took several of us about a weekend to make the frame (some welding involved) cut the...

While we never had much of a problem with food attracting wild life we have experience holes nibbled in munchie bags, and a couple of times an animal rolled a cooler around in the middle of the night... To keep food from the critters I decided to, armor plate it/carry and store it in ammo cans...

Yep! Layering a sleeping bag gives many temperature options for more comfort, at a wider range of temperature... I atoo am a big fan of this technique... I often use double sided hook and loop straps (Velcro one-wrap, or a cheaper chinese knock off) to help keep rolled gear under control... I...

I, too, have a few thrift stores that I frequent. I am, also, not above pawn shopping (most recently for Blu-ray movies)... always on the lookout for equipment (upgrades and replacements), tho'. Much of my outdoor wear (shirts, jeans and (aggressive tread) walking shoes; comes from wally-mart...

The New Camping Mistakes We Make

Here in Colorado it can be sunny on one side of the street and raining on the other. The situation can become worse as you travel in the mountains; I have been rained, snowed, drizzled and graupeled (tiny snow balls) upon, in camp, all within 20 minutes and then the sun came out. Sometimes it...
