We took the morning for a leisure paddle on our local river.IMG_20220605_094054174~2.jpgThe train was crossing the bridge just after we put in. IMG_20220605_094036534~2.jpgI didn't want to paddle under till it had passed. The water was a little stained from heavy rains day before last.IMG_20220605_094757206~2.jpgIMG_20220605_095810572~2.jpg We followed the creek out to the main river channel IMG_20220605_102402327~2.jpg We paddled up the river and into another creek to check on a beaver denIMG_20220605_105835099~2.jpg a lot more bush has grown up around the beaver den, but it's still there and being maintained by the occupants. We could see the fresh mud and sticks plastered on the outside.IMG_20220605_114939712~2.jpg We paddled up that creek till it got to shallow. It's was getting hot out and the sun was straight up, so we decided to return to the vehicle. IMG_20220605_115043101~2.jpg back toward the river, across and up the creek we came out of.IMG_20220605_095902751~2.jpg We saw lots of turtles, blue herons, red wing black birds and heard lots of other bird calls. It was a good paddle. It was an adventurous week end.

Blue gill, bass and catfish. Fishing is pretty good. The river channel is dammed by a low weir dam which used to supply water to a coal fired power plant. There are no natural lakes in east TN. All our lakes are dammed for power generation. What makes this small lake so unique is that the water level is not controlled by the dam. Unlike all the other lakes in this area, this one has lots of plant life growing in the rich soil that is in the shallow areas.
On a sad note, there is a lot of pollution surrounding these creeks and river. Run off from farm animals and agriculture, along with major industries pollute these waters. Our local town, as other ones, pull water from this river. I wouldn't swim in it.
I don't mean to end it on a sad note, but this beautiful flowing river is a great example of why we need to do all we can to find ways to reduce pollution from flowing in it. This Houston River is a major supply to the Tn river system all the way to the Mississippi.
