Tomahawks v Axes?

I use Swedish axes but I rarely bring them while hiking, too much weight. I will have some collapsible saw alongside my knife. This combo works pretty well.

They are taught to raise the wood with the axe, then bring them down together to split wood. (I think it is almost as dangerous that way as swinging but then I was taught early to swing.)

It's more dangerous than the normal way. The #1 most important part of using an ax is retaining full control over it. How is a kid going to have control of a 3' wooden pole with a 20lb log on the end of it? They certainly aren't going to be able to stop that axe if the wood falls off and the physics change suddenly. That's a horrible idea.

Then again, I have... issues... with the Boy Scouts in general.
