Outdoor Cooking: Outdoor Cooking Safety

Safety is never more important in the outdoors than when you are doing any type of outdoor cooking where you may be working with anything that could burn or set fire to either you or your surroundings. Playing it safe will mean you will be able to enjoy yourself while doing outdoor cooking and also enjoy your meal. If you are using any type of flame for outdoor cooking, be very cautious in how you move around it and keep children far away to prevent any possible potential accidents.

Safety in this situation is first considered by making sure you are wearing long sleeves to avoid hot drips or splatter onto your arms. This can be from grease, or even just a volatile fluid like starter fluid or an oil seasoning. A grease burn can be very painful as unlike an immediate burn which ends right away the grease continues to stay hot for some time and will continue burning you even if you wipe at it. Baking soda is very good for grease burns and will help to put them out even if they are burning uncontrollably. In fact, the only way to put out a grease or gas fire is by using baking soda on it.

Be cautious with your meat and other food sources. Keep them away from the sun and from insects in order to avoid contamination or meat spoiling which may destroy your meal and possibly make people sick. This means keeping everything in plastic bags or coolers until they are ready to use and to also cook everything at the right temperature in order to make the meat safe. Be conscious if anyone has any allergies and avoid letting your food come in contact with anything which could be dangerous to them.

Children are a very curious lot. If you are doing any kind of outdoor cooking, be sure you do not leave it unattended if there are children around who may go over to see if the food is ready and burn themselves. This is also true if they are playing nearby; never leave any flame unattended. If necessary, have someone watching any children in the area to avoid accidents. If no one can be watching them, keep them inside the house during cooking.

If you are using any knives or other sharp objects, be cautious where you set them down in order to avoid cutting yourself. In addition, make sure they are not resting against the heat source you are using for your outdoor cooking as it could heat up and burn you when you next pick it up. In addition, use different knives for preparing the food you are going to be using for your outdoor cooking as some individuals are allergic to certain types of foods. Not using the same knife for different jobs will mean everyone will still be able to enjoy the great tasting food you make when you doing outdoor cooking.
