If you love the outdoors, then you will love Eagle Nest Lake State Park. At 8,300 feet elevation, the park offers a cooler climate than one might expect for sunny New Mexico. There is an amazing array of wildlife throughout the park, making it a haven for animals and wildlife watchers alike.
If you enjoy being outdoors and simply observing nature and wildlife, then this is a great place for you to spend your vacation. There are elk, eagles, turkeys, deer and many different species of birds to watch and enjoy. Additionally, 2,400 acre Eagles Nest Lake is stocked with Rainbow Trout and Kokanee Salmon. This makes the park and excellent choice for sport fishermen who enjoy the outdoors and want a scenic view while enjoying their favorite sport.
Boaters and Campers will also get great enjoyment from Eagle Nest Lake. There are many boating areas to enjoy and two boat docks throughout the large lake. The water in the lake is cold through most of the year, therefore swimming and water skiiing are not recommended by the park staff. Although they are permitted activities. You can bring your canoe or kayak along on your visit, but you must be prepared for immersion in cold water. There are minimal fees for using the lake and they are paid on a daily basis. The lake also offers the ability to do some ice fishing in the winter months, only on specific parts of the lake.
There are many campsites throughout the park, including some that are tent only and others that are accessible to RVs.
Eagle Nest Lake State Park offers many events throughout the year that appeal to its visitors. There are wildlife tracking tours, birdwatching groups and tours and fishing clinics for children. Each of these events is open to anyone who would like to attend and most are free with paid park admission.
Admission and Passes
If you intend to be a frequent state park visitor in New Mexico, then you should consider purchasing an annual pass which gives you unlimited admission to the various parks. The cost is $40. There is a $5 per car daily fee for using State Park facilities. Campsite prices range from $8-$20 and come with various locations and amenities according to the price level. There is an annual camping pass available as well, and it is $180 for New Mexico Residents and $225 for those who are not residents of the state.
Eagle Nest Lake State Park is an excellent haven for the outdoor enthusiast who prefers to observe nature and wildlife while relaxing by the side of a beautiful lake. It may not be the best place for young children, as activities like swimming are not readily available.
