The Big Agnes Hager House tent is a free-standing, three person, three season tent made for backpacking or base camp. This tent is versatile, made with eco-friendly materials, and poles that are sturdy, yet lightweight. For some of the extra configurations, however, you will need either trekking poles or a set of adjustable poles. Another item that you should consider purchasing is the footprint, which is highly recommended by Big Agnes to preserve the floor of the tent. The footprint is required for some of the configurations, as well. The tent is $299.95 (MSRP), and the footprint is $40.00 (MSRP).
The Big Agnes Hager House tent is one of the most versatile tents on the market. It can transform into different structures; sunshade, windbreak, and a car- or tree-supported shelter. Different tent configurations add to the versatility; you bring only what you need and leave behind what you don’t. For example, the fast fly shelter configuration only requires the footprint, tent fly, poles, and stakes. Setup is easy with the plastic clips and press fit connectors; average time is about 10 minutes once you get the hang of it. Fully packed the Big Agnes Hager House weighs in at 6lb, 7oz. The floor length is 86 inches and width is 72 inches, with 44 inches of headroom. All packed up and ready to go the tent measures in at 7”x22”.
The main sleeping area of the Big Agnes Hager House tent is 43 square feet, with an additional 10 square feet of space in the vestibule area that comes in handy to store your gear without cluttering the tent. Inside the tent there are four large mesh floor pockets for even more storage. There are also two large D-shaped doors at either end of the tent, which makes it much easier to get into and out of without disturbing others. The poles are a DAC Reverse Combination system with press fit connectors and lightweight hubs. The great part about the poles other than how high tech and light they are, is that they feature eco-friendly anodizing. This green process doesn’t use any phosphoric or nitric acid in the manufacturing process and also saves water. Another eco-friendly part of the tent is the seam tape, which is waterproof and solvent free; no PVC or VOCs.
Some other great extras include a reflective guy line for nighttime visibility and mesh windows on the vestibule doors. The top of the tent is also made of mesh and provides not only ventilation, but a view of the sky, and that’s the whole reason you’re out there in the first place. Only the top is mesh, so there are no worries about privacy. As far as the material, the fly is durable nylon rip-stop with a 1500mm waterproof polyurethane coating, the floor is polyester rip-stop with the same coating, and the tent body itself is a lightweight polyester mesh and breathable polyester rip-stop. There are also gear loft loops inside for hanging a flashlight or other Big Agnes loft accessories.
With all these features, this tent is a great buy at $299.95 (MSRP), considering you are getting way more than just a tent. The tent transforms and wants to be part of your trip, however it’s needed. You can also rest easy, quite literally, knowing the tent is Big Agnes quality. On a scale of one to five, the Big Agnes Hager House tent scores a 4, with the deduction being that the tent may not be quite long enough to comfortably suit people over 6 feet tall.
