Repairing Flats

I was just curious. Has anyone ever tried to repair tube punctures with techniques other than the conventional super glue and rubber patch method? For example, maybe trying to melt rubber with a hot iron and smoothing it over the puncture?

What other techniques can be used?

I always carry spares. When I have a flat out on the road I put the spare in then patch the punctured tube when I get home.

I was just toying around with the idea of trying other techniques that might be a more permanent fix than a patch and super glue, like putting a small piece of rubber over the puncture and then trying to melt the rubber into it.
