    Bowhunting for Wild Pigs

A friend of mine wants me to go pig hunting with him. I've shot pigs before with a rifle but never with a bow. Are there any pointers on how to purse the pigs, where the best shot placement is, or how to track it down once it's been shot?

Cell Phones at the Camp Site

Most of the camp sites where we go camping are all out of cell range till you make it to the next town. To me this is a good thing because I know that no one will bother us and we won't be tempted to use it. It's nice to get away from the everyday and camping is the best way to do that.

    What do you eat?

When I go camping with my family to a State Camp site we bring hotdogs, hamburgers, bacon, vegetables to cook in foil, chips, oatmeal, and trail mix. Sometimes we pack salads and watermelon, too. We will eat fish if we go fishing and catch anything. Pretty much whatever the kids will eat, we...

Trekking Solo or In A Group Setting?

I have gone trekking solo and in a group setting. I prefer to go solo even though I have had some close calls where a single mistake made could cause a huge problem for me. But going by myself I have seen things that I would have never been able to see if I was with a group. I would like to know...

    Purifying water

I think the best method would be to boil the water. You could build some form of a filtration system out of birch bark, sand, charcoal, and grasses if the water isn't clear, but even then I would still boil it. The safest way is to let the water boil for twenty minutes. That should kill off any...

    What Animals Do You See?

I agree that it all depends on the time of year you are out in the woods. I have seen mostly deer, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, hawks, turkeys, and foxes. I have ran across bear and moose tracks, but thankfully have never met up with any while hiking. Living in the Adirondacks I have also...

    Have You Ever Gotten Lost?

I have gotten lost before while hiking. It was when I was younger and very inexperienced. I can definitely say that I panicked when I realized that I had taken a wrong turn from the marked path. It had taken me a good three hours of back tracking to find the markers again. I let this be a lesson...

    Open up those windows!

Living here in upstate New York, the weather all summer has been a little cooler than usual. This fall has been warm and then cool and then warm again. It has definitely affected how fast the trees have changed. Most of our foliage is past peak already and their calling for snow in the mountains...

    Campfire biscuits

Every meal is better with biscuits! I haven't had any luck making campfire biscuits though. The next time I go camping I'm going to have to try this recipe out along with some chicken and dumplings. I've made Bannock for the kids. There are four simple ingredients: flour, baking powder, butter...

    Biking solo.

I like to bike ride alone if I'm close to home. My neighborhood has bike trails which were once railroad tracks that became unused. They connect four towns together and are very well traveled. If I decide to bike a trail that is out in a wooded area then I like to go with someone. I like having...

Do you prefer to go hiking alone or to always have someone with you?

I have done both but I prefer to hike with someone. I always have someone with me if the hiking trail is along falls or if the trail is steep, just as a safety precaution. Plus, it's more enjoyable to have someone to share the experience with. You never know what your going to run into when out...

Eating The Cattail Plant for Survival.

I was watching a survival show on the Weather Channel last weekend and found out that eating cattail plant roots can aid in survival if stranded out in the wilderness. The plant has a mild flavor and is filled with a ton of starch. I never knew this plant could be eaten. Are there any other...

    Preferred model of Pop up?

My favorite brand of pop-up is Palomino. They have been around for many years and are very reliable. I would say that the type of pop-up you want would depend on what you need. I look for ones that have a lot of accessories and a bathroom in them. I have kids so believe me having a bathroom in...

    Coming across deer

When I go camping I don't normally see deer. I think its because of where I camp. It seems like the deer tend to stay away from State Parks. I have seen a lot of deer while hiking though. I remember one time I was hiking and ran into a whole pack of female deer eating. That was a very memorable...

Do you hunt for your own food when camping?

I don't hunt for food when I go camping. The places where I go camping do not allow you to hunt for food. They are just strictly for camping. I do however go fishing sometimes when I go camping and if I catch anything I will eat it that evening.
