The only permits that are hard to secure is Whitney and Half Dome. All other trails are somewhat easier to get. When I was able to backpack, I usually get my permit that morning.
I hate rain too, and I've never had rain while hiking.
It's a lottery, so if you get lucky and get the permit, that's it. If the weather is bad, you deal with it. In August (when I went), weather wasn't a factor, like (no) snow.

I know it's an old thread, but my longest day hike was my "Death-March" to Mount Whitney "Death-March", 22 miles round-trip and took me about 16 hours.
I enjoyed my snowshoe trips in Yosemite (and beyond). No crowds, no bugs, and I didn't have to worry about meat spoiling!

When I was able to backpack, I used two trekking poles. Since I have some mobility issues now (can't bend either knees) and I got into photography again, I use my tripod.
I'm here....finally. I never got the confirmation e-mail (twice), so Jason activated mt account by hand. I like the format, one of my photography sites uses it too.
