    MSR Whisperlite

It's a rock solid stove. I have one I use when I am not solo. I am using a White Box alcohol stove for solo now. The Whisperlite has never failed. I have even left it out in the rain by accident one time. I just poured the water out and it worked fine. It does take a few tries to get the...

    REI outdoor gear

You can probably contact Keen directly to get them replaced. I have done that with a few pairs of Merrells. Most of the "name brand" folks offer a very generous warranty. If you bought them from REI, you can take them back there too.

It was the Smokey Mountains this weekend.

CS 49 is a good site, especially when there are no bugs :) You'll have to hunt a bit for firewood though.

    REI outdoor gear

I buy quite of bit of stuff from REI, probably boots being the #1 item. In general, they sell for suggested retail but give you a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you don't like something for any reason you can take it back. A few times a year they have a sale and about twice a year they do a 20%...

What do you wear when it is cold?

I normally wear a short sleeve shirt until it gets down to 45 or so. After that I wear a long sleeve synthetic shirt. I get too hot while walking with more than that. When I stop I will put on a few layers to keep warm. I just got a new down sweater for this winter but haven't needed to use it yet.

    Flashlight iPhone App

There are quite a few of these on Google Play. Some just turn on the LED used with the camera. It is useful for things like finding keys, etc. Some turn on the screen, set the background to white, and crank up the brightness. These actually produce a good bit of light in a room. I'd pick a...

My kids are the same way anytime we go anywhere. I need to know the parents of the kids before they can join.

    Battery Charger?

I was going to suggest to taking an extra battery but then I saw the iPhone/iPad. There are a few different options out there. Just Google "iphone phone battery chargers" and you find 100s of options.

    Air Mattress

For car camping I have one of the big Coleman air beds. For backpacking I have a few different pads but I have been using the Thermarest NeoAir (old model) for quite a while now and love it. I use it in the hammock and tent, it works just as well in both. It will keep me warm into the 20s...

    Camping Chairs

For regular camping chairs I really like the Kelty chairs. They show up in clearance type sales a few times a year for $17. I have used the original pair I bought at least 200 times now. I bought another set and probably have 100 days on them. Other than a little wear around the cup holder they...

    Ever want to turn back?

I have turned around a few times when I felt unsafe. Mostly due to high water. I have changed my plans based on weather forecasts too.

Dealing with poisonous snakes and insects

We have copperheads and rattlesnakes here but I really don't pay them mind. Occasionally I run across a rattler and I will watch him for a while. I am fascinated with the way their bodies move when agitated. While I don't think copperheads are more rare, I just don't see them since they don't...

    Making a Gear List?

No list for me either, I just go through things mentally as I pack.
