    Going barefoot?

Apparently there's a whole barefoot thing going around and nobody told me. I was out hiking on Sunday and meet a guy who was walking barefoot. Of course I wen't over and asked him if he was lost and if he needed some help. He looked at me like I was crazy and said no he was fine, why? I pointed...

    Ghillie suit.

I noticed a couple of people hunting with ghillie suits and it got me thinking, does it have any real benefits? Most game animals have poor eyesight, they rely on their noses and ears for detection. Wouldn't just regular cameos and scent masker be as effective?

    Walkie-talkies.

Do you still get any use out of yours? I usually pack them when we are out hiking in very remote country, but on most trails I get a full signal on my cell.

    Folding a T-shirt.

I was browsing around and found a guide on how to effectively fold a t-shirt in the most efficient manner, or so some blogger claims. Anyway, here's the link if anybody is interested.

Do you have any shark stories?

I have an uncle who swears he was bumped on the leg by a shark, but I'm thinking that was most likely a dolphin. If it were a shark, it would have taken a bite as a souvenir. Nevertheless, every year at Thanksgiving Ahab recounts his run in with the "7 foot long devil".

    A GPS for geocaching.

My girlfriend wants to try this out, she says it will make our outdoor trips more fun, whatever that means. Anyway, does anybody have any recommendations for an ok GPS device.

How do you deal with ticks?

My usual go to solution is wearing pants instead of shorts, I never understood people who wore shorts in the woods. My next line of defense is some lemon juice rubbed over my skin.

Cars should be banned from the great outdoors.

Yesterday me and my girlfriend decided to go on a little trek, we took our dog as well. She's the puppy I found a couple of months ago. We started off on a trail that leads to a meadow, where it splits into multiple trails. The only problem is that the meadow is accessible by car, what this...

Is it just me or are people confusing survival with camping?

It's seems with the numerous survival reality shows being aired today, people are starting to think that "survival" is just another way of saying lightweight camping. I think the disclaimers should be more pronounced, otherwise I'm thinking more and more people are going to end up hurt or worse.

When do you start swimming outdoors?

Summer is fast approaching and with temperatures steadily climbing I think I'll be able to go swimming around the first week of may. It will be a nice change of scenery from the pool.

How long are your day hikes?

I usually clock in as many daylight hours as possible. This means heading out at dawn, which is a very annoying habit according to my girlfriend :).

Do you still read printed books?

I have to admit I'm a slave to my Kindle. However since I broke three last year, I've been lugging around printed copies whenever I travel. I almost forgot how nice it is to actually feel the paper between your fingers.

    Backpacking with your significant other.

At first it was a pretty trying experience. She packed everything but the kitchen sink or maybe that was there as well. As time went by it got better though. How do you guys manage when your are backpacking with that special someone?

How often do you change your gear?

I usually only change my gear when I have to. I try not to get suckered in by every new gadget that comes my way. That's not to say I'm 100% successful, but I try.

    Narrow trails in winter.

I have a friend who regularly treks some very narrow trails in mid winter, considering a small slip could mean a 30 foot drop, I regularly call him nuts. Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad idea?

    Chili and beer?

My sister and her husband were over for dinner the other day. After finishing our meal, which was chili, my brother in law suggested I add some beer to it next time. Has anyone tried this, what should I expect flavor wise?

I found a puppy in the woods.

I looked around for the owner, but after an hour I gave up since it started to get dark. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow, I'm hoping he has an id chip. Any advice on what to do, if he doesn't have one?

    Camping overseas.

When camping overseas, I'm told some campsites offer safes for your valuables. Would you trust them? Depending on the particular country, I wouldn't. Or would you prefer keeping them on your person?

    Sno Seal.

Somebody recommended I use Sno Seal to waterproof my boots. I was curious if Sno Seal had any advantage over any other type of beeswax based waterproofing?

    Thoughts about Goretex?

I think they're great for boots, unless you plan going anywhere near salt water. For clothes however they end up being a pricey gimmick, since they are pretty much useless after a few washes. What's your experience?
