I found some coleman lanterns on craigslist used. They are not working and I am working on repairing them. They have a little bit of rush on them in a few places. What I'm wondering is what I should use to repaint them. Does it have to be high heat paint or will regular spray paint work?

I would use a very high-temp paint on them as the normal paint will not hold up for long and can give off some pretty nasty and invisible toxins when heated to a few hundred degrees.

I have an old Coleman probably 20-30 years old and still going strong.

The local Lowes sells some high temp paint. I would suggest using it also. It is worth any extra you may spend on it.

to clean out the tank and valves, use carburetor cleaner available from any auto parts store. Spray some in the tank, pump it up, and turn it on. It will clean out any gunk left in there.
