I had a belly laugh when I read this very serious book written in 1906.
[The Book of Camping and Woodcraft by Horace Kephart (Legacy Edition)].
Why did I laugh?
It wasn't so much about what I read, though it was amusing, it was more about me thinking about how sophisticated and educated I am.
It seems all the talk about the essentials of today was very much the topic in 1906.

To give you a peek and encourage you to pick the book up, because, among other things, it is both interesting and practical.

CHAPTER VI
A checklist - Packing Up.

"On the following list, such articles as should be dispensed with when traveling light are starred; those used only on special trips are queried." ----->

Outfit for each man in the wilderness.

Wear:
Coat (duxbak or khaki; Mackinaw, if preferred, in winter).
Knickers or trousers (firm, closely woven gray kersey, tweed, or homespun).
Undershirt, drawers, stockings, or socks (woolen).
Overshirt (gray flannel).
Money belt.
Shoes light leather hunting; heavier, with hobnails, for mountaineering),
Leggings loden, or cloth puttiees).
Hat (smoke-colored felt, flannel sweat-band, ventilators).
Neckercief (gray silt).
Belt and sheath-knife.

And on it goes -----> have fun reading this informative book and see how similar we are in this day.

Horace Kephart is great. So are George Sears aka Nessmuk, Col Townsend Whelen, Sig Olsen, and many others.

I've got the Camping And Woodcraft book by Kephart. It is a facsimile edition published in 1988. IMG_20240120_034327823.jpg
It's interesting to read.

Plenty of wisdom in the old books. Old ways are the best ways.
"Horses, Hitches and Rocky Trails" by Joe Back. Great style even if you don't pack horses.
